Health Technology Assessment – what is it?

Health technology assessment (HTA) refers to the systematic evaluation of properties, effects, and/or impacts of health technology. It is a multidisciplinary process to evaluate the social, economic, organizational and ethical issues of a health intervention or health technology. The main purpose of conducting an assessment is to inform policy decision makers.
 
Since when Health Technology Assessment started in Lithuania?
 
On 1st January 2020 changes of the Law on Pharmacy of the Republic of Lithuania will come into force, which foresee that the Commission, responsible for the final reimbursement decision, will receive united opinion about submitted application which will include clinical value and pharmacoeconomical value evaluations. These evaluations will be performed by the State Medicine Control Agency of Lithuania.
   
During transitional period starting from 13th July 2019 applications for reimbursement of medicine will be evaluated according to old and new evaluation practise, meaning that application will be evaluated according to old therapeutical value evaluation system and additional pharmacoeconomical evaluation will be performed and submitted to the Commission.
